Game Of Thrones: 4 Spin-Offs HBO Should Make (& 3 They Shouldn't)

Spin-Offs They Shouldn't Make...

3. Dunk & Egg

When talk of a Game of Thrones spin-off arises, you can guarantee that mention of The Tales of Dunk & Egg won't be far behind, and it's easy to see why: this is the other written series from GRRM in this universe. Martin himself has said that it'd be the obvious choice, albeit as TV movies, not a big multi-season TV show.

The series tells the story of Ser Duncan the Tall, aka Dunk, a hedge knight who would go on to become one of the most celebrated members of the Kingsguard in history, and Aegon V Targaryen, aka Egg, his squire who would later become King. They're set around 90-70 years before the events of the main story that we know, and so far three novellas have been released, with more planned.

Dunk & Egg are the only recurring characters, as we follow them on their progression through life from Hedge Knight to King and Kingsguard, and there aren't many familiar faces around at this point of the story. They're fun adventures, but I don't think they'd work particularly well as a Game of Thrones spin-off for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, it probably doesn't offer up the sort of material that HBO will be looking for and fans will expect, but more-so is that they're really quite slight. They're all mostly self-contained stories, which doesn't really lend itself to a series, and couldn't be stretched very far without wearing thin (the Hobbit effect is something to be quite wary of here).

Update: Martin has confirmed that this won't be one of the spin-offs, because he wouldn't want another situation with a TV show getting ahead of the books, but does think it might happen "eventually"/
