Game Of Thrones: 5 Major Book Changes From "The House Of Black And White"
1. Varys And Tyrion's Roadtrip
On The Show: Forced to flee King’s Landing with Tyrion after the assassination of Tywin, Varys brings Tyrion on a roadtrip toward Meereen to join with Daenerys and prepare her for a conquest to Westeros.
In The Books: Varys and Tyrion go their separate ways after Tywin’s death. Tyrion travels to Pentos, where Illyrio Mopatis sends Tyrion to join a group of travelers that includes a young man believing himself to be Aegon Targaryen, the son of Rhaegar who was smuggled out of the Red Keep and switched with another infant before the sack of King’s Landing. Varys, on the other hand, remains hidden in the shadows of King’s Landing, sabotaging the growing law and order by killing Ser Kevan and plunging the capital back into chaos to pave to way for a Targaryen return to power.
What It Could Mean: Varys and Tyrion’s roadtrip could mean...kind of a lot. With Aegon not yet present at a place in the narrative where he ought to have been introduced, it is surprisingly possible that the Aegon plot may be entirely abandoned, thus proving many readers’ suspicions correct and establishing the young man as a fraud and little more than a red herring to distract from Dany as the true Targaryen threat to the Iron Throne.
