Game Of Thrones: 6 Best Moments From The Watchers On The Wall

6. Sam Becomes A Man

Since hearing that Mole€™s Town was attacked by the Wildlings last episode, Sam has been ridden with guilt. Having sent Gilly there to keep her safe, he actually put her in harm€™s way, and now he thinks she is dead. To his great relief, however, Gilly turns up alive at the gates of Castle Black with baby Sam, having been spared by Ygritte. Reinvigorated with the need to keep her safe, he hides her in a storage room as the Wildlings begin the attack. She pleads with him to stay with her, but Sam can€™t abandon his duty. He has to protect the Wall "because that's what men do." He finally kisses Gilly and tells her he€™ll be back. Sam has come a long way from being the cowardly, sniveling manboy we met at the beginning of the first season. He€™s been hardened by many near-death experiences and focused through his compassion for Gilly. Her reappearance here gives Sam a reason to fight as hard as he does; it is doubtless he would have survived the night without her existence giving him purpose. This scene firmly establishes this, symbolized by the kiss he previously never had the courage to go for. Aemon says love is the death of duty, but Samwell kind of proves otherwise. Sam may love Gilly, but he won€™t let that stand in the way of fulfilling his duty to protecting the realms of men, a fulfillment of which enhances his caring for her.
