Game Of Thrones: 6 Best Moments From The Watchers On The Wall

2. Edd Drops The Scythe

Before handing command off to Edd, Jon tells him to drop the scythe when the Wildlings climb high enough. Sure enough a small band of them gets close enough to the top and Edd gives the order. The chains are cut, the ice shatters, and a giant anchor emerges from underneath. Gravity does the rest, and the scythe swings a massive distance across the wall, taking out all the WIldlings in its path. Seeing this, the remaining Wildlings retreat...for now. This is another spectacular moment in an action packed episode; a visually splendid way to cap off a blood-soaked episode. It was really great to see a previously unseen nor mentioned weapon of the Night's Watch be used in such a satisfactory fashion. Once again the special effects are incredibly well done, and most importantly, proper scale is presented. It looks big, heavy, and dangerous. The moment itself, like many moments in this episode, has a comedic touch to it, which is not surprising given Neil Marshall's direction. He always seems to be able to find the humor in the violence and gore without it veering to heavily into outright comedy. It is a fun way to end an exciting and compelling battle.
