Game Of Thrones: 7 Best Moments From Breaker Of Chains

6. Tywin Makes An Offer

This episode gave us arguably the biggest scene for Oberyn Martell so far this season, and despite focusing on his sexuality again to the point where he risks being one note, it eventually becomes a highlight when Tywin enters. He casually interrogates the Red Viper, bringing up the fact that he is very knowledgeable in poisons, having studied them at the Citadel. The two discuss Elia and the Mountain, in which Tywin denies any direct involvement. He does, however, offer Oberyn the chance to not only meet Gregor himself, but to obtain a seat on the Small Council where he can have real power. In exchange, he will have to be one of the three judges at Tyrion's trial. This scene is great because not only does it offer us more insight into Oberyn's character, but the interaction between him and Tywin is wonderfully staged and fascinating to watch. We actually get to witness Tywin ask for help, which Oberyn humorously acknowledges, and in doing so we can see that, from his point of view, Tywin is kind of right. Conflict is breeding everywhere, and if the Lannisters are going to hold on to their position, they will have to make new alliances, which includes allying with those they have grudges with. It's a spot of political vulnerability we rarely see from Tywin, and Oberyn relishes in it. Interestingly enough, we never actually see if Oberyn shakes Tywin's hand. A hint of things to come? We'll have to wait and see.
