Game Of Thrones: 7 Best Moments From Breaker Of Chains
4. Tywin Schools Tommen
If it wasn't evident already, there was lots of good Tywin material in this episode, and it starts off with the best. As Joffrey's lies in state in the Great Sept of Baelor, Tywin wastes no time moving on from Joffrey to Tommen. The circumstances couldn't be more inappropriate, especially since his grieving mother is right there. Tywin doesn't care though, evident by the fact that he badmouths Joffrey right there in front of her, and the boy's corpse. To him, Joffrey was a problem that is now gone. Tommen is the new king, and he is young enough (not to mention sane) that Tywin sees the opportunity to mold him into a king he can stand behind. He quizzes the boy on what makes a good ruler; using the faults of past kings to counter his answers. He then swoops in and takes Tommen away from Cersei, as if he knows how much she messed up with Joffrey. Nice move, Tywin. This scene stands out not just because Charles Dance is as commanding a presence as ever, but because what he is saying has genuine truth to it. The point is that no one quality Tommen gives is good enough; it is only together and in the hands of a wise person that these characteristics can be used to rule justly, a quality that is itself hard to define. For all of Tywin's callous behavior towards his family and the brutality of his actions, he is wise in his own way, and that is what this scene gets across probably better than any scenes prior. He still can't be forgiven for orchestrating the Red Wedding though.
