Game Of Thrones: 9 Most Mind-Bending Character Transformations
3. Stannis Baratheon
How He First Appears On our first introduction to Stannis, he is the grumpy, middle-aged man who has suffered the injustice of having his rightful claim to the throne removed from him. He denies the legitimacy of his daughter, courts the witch Melisandre after the failure of his wife to produce a male heir, and essentially acts in order to further his own ambitions. The transformation of Stannis from a character of relentless ambition to total resignation is a stark one. Few characters, even within the world of Game of Thrones, have the opportunity to become as complex and contradictory as this. What He Becomes As Season 5 progresses however, his character is slowly rebuilt. His experiences at the wall, seeing real evidence of Wight Walkers, and an impending apocalypse, strengthen his convictions, but it is the growth of his daughter, and his ultimate acceptance of her which brings about the biggest change in how the audience perceives him. In his final days, he is pulled in an endless number of directions, as the two things which matter most to him - his daughter and his claim to the throne - come into direct conflict. When he comes out of this test, he is a different character altogether. He's filled with remorse, regret and resignation. The pity is, he doesn't get the chance to show it.
