Game Of Thrones: Every Episode Ranked From Worst To Best
14. The Laws Of Gods And Men (S4E6)
Written By: Bryan Cogman Directed By: Alik Sakharov
The single greatest scene in Game of Thrones history? It's almost a thankless task trying to choose (bit like ranking all the episodes, eh guys?) but Tyrion's grandstanding, give-me-all-of-the-Emmys speech is right up there.
The rest of the episode is solid, with Shae's appearance on the stand, Yara failing to rescue Theon, and a fun cameo from Mark Gatiss, but it's the Dink who truly elevates this episode into something special.
13. The Bells (S8E5)
Written By: David Bemioff & D.B. Weiss Directed By: Miguel Sapochnik
"I've always hated the bells. They ring for horror, a dead king, a city under siege."
Varys' old words come into a new light in The Bells, which is where Season 8 delivers one last showcase for its ability to produce spectacle on a scale that's unmatched anywhere else on TV, with some breathtaking results.
If The Long Night was hidden by darkness, then this turns on the light and forces us to watch as the horrors of war emerge, with no place to hide from the flames. Emilia Clarke, who completely raised her game in the final season, sells the turn without having to say much of anything, and from there we get a brilliant, brutal act of war that shows us how terrible it really is.
There's some great smaller stuff in here too - the farewell between Tyrion and Jaime is one to bring a tear - but it's the big beats that will be best remembered: Cleganebowl delivers, Arya serves as our eyes and ears to the horrifying fate of King's Landing, Jaime and Cersei meet their ends together (as they had to), and all the while a city burns. The atrocities are awful to witness, but you cannot look away, and the story makes one last, huge swerve just when you thought you had it figured out, which is what Game of Thrones has long excelled at.
