Game Of Thrones: Every Hand Of The King, Ranked

2. Davos Seaworth

Game of Thrones Davos
HBO/Helen Sloan

Davos Seaworth is the kind of Hand that Ned Stark should have been. He’s a good man; honourable, noble, humble. However, he’s much cleverer than Eddard and manages to keep his head through the entire series.

Davos works as Hand for both Jon and Stannis, and for each men provides a wise counsel without any self serving goals. He sticks to his morals like Ned, and in slightly different circumstances might have died in Season 2 or 3 for his conflict with Melisandre.

Ultimately, he was correct about her corrupting influence on Stannis, even if he needed her help later to bring Jon back.

As Jon’s Hand, he was in a precarious position, but walked the tightrope well and listened to Jon’s request. Jon frequently noted that he didn’t want to be King in the North or King of the Seven Kingdoms, and a more scheming hand might have worked against Jon’s interest to tighten his grip on both claims.

Davos though managed to provide Jon with advice and battlefield assistance without pushing his claim forward. Even when he proposes proposal to Tyrion, it’s to end the tension between Jon & Dany’s claims and set Jon up in a marriage of love.
