Game Of Thrones Finale: 10 Characters No One Expected To Make It To The End

A little bit of a curveball here, and you’d be forgiven for asking ‘who?’ on this entry. Illyrio Mopatis only appeared in the first season, and unlike all the other characters here is practically guaranteed not to appear in the finale, though he is alive.

It’s worth remembering though as he’s part of a very select group in a piece of Game Of Thrones trivia. Along with Jon, Daenerys, Arya, Sansa, Bran and Tyrion, Illyrio is one of only seven named characters to have appeared in the first episode and still be alive.

For what it’s worth, there are 27 other named characters in the series premiere, including Ned, Robb, Jaime, Cersei, Joffrey, and Drogo, who’ve all perished at various times since.

Illyrio is crucial in bringing Drogo and Daenerys together, and therefore set in progress the major arc of the entire show. He swiftly disappears after this however, and will certainly be giving the finale a miss too.

He’s essentially a Varys or Littlefinger type character, only for Essos rather than Westeros.

Considering what happened to those two characters once the writing started racing towards the conclusion, it’s probably for the best that he’s nowhere to be seen.
