Game Of Thrones Preview: What To Expect From S5E9 The Dance Of Dragons

5. And So Does Stannis

Stannis is still continuing on his march to Winterfell and a war with the Boltons, despite the treacherous conditions and the difficult odds of even making it that far, never mind actually winning. He does have one ace up his sleeve, but it€™s one he€™s extremely reluctant to play: Melisandre. Her use of king€™s blood worked to get rid of both Robb Stark and Joffrey Baratheon, and she believes that it will win him this war. The only problem is that to do so would require Stannis sacrificing his daughter Shireen. He€™s thus far rejected that option out-of-hand, but with his chances of success decreasing, could he now be tempted? As he says in the teaser: €œIf a man knows what he is, he must fulfil his destiny.€ It€™s clear he€™s talking about himself, and his destiny to be king. Is he willing to make the ultimate sacrifice in order to achieve that? Ever since he and Shireen had a father-daughter bonding session a few episodes ago the alarm bells have been ringing for her future, and as the image above shows she has a chat with Davos in this episode. Their scenes together are always something different, and more heartfelt, than those conversations we normally see. Could this be a further sign that Shireen isn€™t long for this world, or is Stannis charging his loyal knight with taking his daughter away to safety?
