Game Of Thrones Recap: 12 Things You Learn Rewatching Season 5
11. Jorah's Greyscale Plot Is Ultimately Underwhelming
In one of the show's biggest departures from the books, Tyrion instead ends up travelling with Jorah Mormont rather than the characters of Griff and Young Griff, with Jorah then taking on the former's part in contracting greyscale as they sail past the Doom of Valyria.
At the time, it felt like, well, a doom. It was this devastating disease that he was keeping a secret, and would surely lead to something major. It did lead to a few strong scenes, namely the farewell between Jorah and Daenerys, and then the moment where Sam cures him (including what might be the greatest piece of editing in the show's history).
That serves to give some development to Sam's character, but on the whole, and from Jorah's point-of-view, it does feel underwhelming compared to the horror felt in the moment here. He gets the greyscale, it's revealed to Daenerys, and then disappears for a bit before returning and getting cured. It's not exactly pleasant for him, but watching it back it's also not the kind of disaster it seemed either.
