Game of Thrones Season 3: 10 Characters Who Underwhelmed

3. Stannis Baratheon

Stannis We all knew that Stannis wasn€™t going to feature nearly as much this season €“ getting your forces demolished at the Blackwater will do that to a man €“ but I still think he outstayed his welcome for an episode or two. Stephen Dillane is excellent as Stannis Baratheon. Let€™s get that out of the way now. But you can€™t make water into wine if you run out of water, and to me Stannis€™ plotline ran out of steam. Granted, he had some excellent scenes €“ especially with his adorable daughter and bonkers wife €“ but too much was spent on his and Melisandre€™s attempts to get back on their feet using a human macguffin. Yes, It didn€™t help that the story writers €“ in a deviation from the books €“ transformed Gendry into a magical plot device, and although his presence on Dragonstone got some good mileage out of Davos, we just got the impression that all this new stuff happened so Stannis could be more involved. The scriptwriters made a bold move this year in only giving Balon and Yara Greyjoy one scene, because there wasn€™t much they could do with them. Maybe they should have done the same with Stannis. Naturally, the middle Baratheon's status as unnecessary part is going to change now he€™s heading for The Wall, but frankly, you could have summed up Stannis€™ plot in two scenes this year €“ him looking grumpy, then him deciding to go to north. Everything else was filler, especially after Gendry escaped.
