Game Of Thrones Season 6: 25 Most Epic Moments

24. Sam Claims Heartsbane

Game of Thrones wildfire King's Landing Sept of Baelor
HBO

Sam came to Castle Black in Season 1 as an overweight coward and has since found courage and even love (Awww). However, when he returned to his home of Horn Hill and sits down to dinner with his father, Randyll Tarly, some of that old Sam comes back.

We've heard stories of Randyll, how he threatened to kill Sam if he didn't denounce his rights and join the Night's Watch. He certainly lived up to his legend as he wastes no time ridiculing Sam and insulting his psedo-family of Gilly and little Sam. Just when it seems like Sam's father issues have broken him, he gathers up Gilly and the baby and takes them with him to Old Town. But before leaving, Sam claims his birthright: the Tarly ancestral sword, Heartsbane.

Sam has killed a White Walker and a Thenn, but this act likely took the most courage of them all. His father has been his tormentor for years and not only does Sam decide to not let himself be controlled by this tyrant anymore, but takes for himself what his father denied him for so long. Also, a Valyrian sword will come in handy in the wars to come.
