The Dorne storyline had grown stale and had fatally misused the Sand Snakes (aside from some hilarious flirting with Bronn) to the point where crossing the sea to their lands was no more than an annoyance.

And given the countrys supposedly fearsome might, having a king who preferred to negotiate peacefully with enemies was never going to fly for too long. He was not made of the right stuff to stay alive in Martins world, and while the death came out of nowhere and felt like an afterthought, he did actually need to go.
