Game Of Thrones Season 6 Finale: 10 Ups And 2 Downs From 'The Winds Of Winter'

6. The Mad Queen

Game of Thrones Cersei Iron Throne Mad Queen
HBO

Speaking of Queens, Cersei, having been the wife of the King, then the King's mother and Queen regent, is now the person sitting on the Iron Throne. Not by any laws of succession, but by a sheer show of force and will.

With the death of Ramsay Bolton last week, and the High Sparrow in this episode, Game of Thrones needed a new human villain, before the threat of the White Walkers really takes over.

While Euron is still probably going to emerge as a credible threat, it's got an even bigger and better villain now, with Cersei sitting on the world's most uncomfortable chair. She has always been there in the background, also plotting and scheming to get her way, but now, with Tywin gone to control things, and her children gone to provide a glimmer of hope and goodness in her, she can fully unleash the madness. The big villains in Thrones have been Joffrey and Ramsay, two brattish types whose maniacal tendencies went unchecked by their parents.

Cersei is different. She's a complex character, one we've actually grown to care for at times, and feel sorry for. That could make her, as the Mad Queen, the best villain yet. Need further proof? Look at her torture of Septa Unella. While the wildfire death looks great, the way she makes the Septa suffer by drowning her in wine - and just keeping her alive, with Ser Gregor (who reveals his face!) for company - is a perfect example of just what sort of ruler she's going to be. With Tommen gone, Cersei has nothing left to lose, and that makes her the most dangerous she's ever been.
