Game Of Thrones Season 6 Finale: 8 Things You Might've Missed In 'The Winds Of Winter'

3. Frey Pies And The Rat Cook

Sticking with Arya, and preceding the glorious moment when she slit the throat of Walder Frey (this show makes us delight in some horrific things), we get the joy of seeing that she baked his sons into a pie (like I was saying...).

This is taking a storyline from the books, one that many (certainly myself) had hoped would find its way into the show. The Frey pies subplot in the book involves the strong suggestion that Lord Wyman Manderly has had Rhaegar, Symond, and Jared Frey (all of whom disappeared on the journey from White Harbour to Winterfell) baked into pies and served at Ramsay Bolton's wedding. It was a particularly nice touch that it happened in the same episode that Lord Manderly finally appeared as well.

The Frey pies story goes even further back though, and to the old tale of the Rat Cook. A member of the Night's Watch, he cooked the son of a King into a pie and served it to him as revenge. The Gods punished the cook and turned him into a rat, not because of the murder, but because he had slain a guest under his roof - something Walder knows all about. In some further foreshadowing, Bran actually told this story back in Season 3.
