Cause Of Death: Holding the door.

Does this really qualify as best? It feels wrong to refer to it as the 'best', in that it's not a wholly 'good' thing, but this death is the hardest hitting of Season 6, and one of the most emotional moments of the entire series: it's tragic, heartbreaking, shocking, heroic.

We've all wondered and theorised about how Hodor became Hodor, and here we learn the truth: that it was because of Bran, and that he was doomed to his fate and could do nothing to prevent it. It was a huge, devastating revelation for one of the show's most beloved supporting players, a character who was truly good and innocent.

It delivered a gut-punch that's still being felt now, and likely will be even when the series is over, an enduring memory that you can't erase. It also served to massively widen the scope of the show, by showing Bran not just to be having visions, but time-travelling, the full ramifications of which haven't yet to be explored. Putting that aside, though, this wouldn't work without character, and here we have the sad loss of a great one, even if he could only say one word.

Not all heroes wear capes. Some just hold the door.

NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far. A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
