Game Of Thrones Season 7: 10 Ups And 2 Downs From 'The Spoils Of War'
1. The Ending
Speaking of issues with the runtime, the ending of this episode did feel very abrubpt. No doubt they would've kept this as the point to end on even if it did stretch to an hour, but it's a slightly frustrating end for such a great episode.
Cliffhangers can work, although they are becoming far less common than they used to be, but not so much when it's trying to make you think someone might die when there's a 99.99% chance they won't. It's why we had a year of lies about Jon Snow not coming back, and while this one will - thankfully - be cleared up much sooner, there's no way Jaime Lannister meets his end here.
It must be said that Jaime has a great episode, proving himself every bit the warrior we know he can be, and displaying real strength in not leaving the troops but leading them instead (once again showing us how different he is to Cersei).
We see chunks of the battle framed around him, and his struggle, and it's captivating. Presumably he'll now be taken prisoner by Daenerys (and thus reunited with Tyrion), which should be a very interesting plot, but this feels like they've gone for a cheap shock before we get to that. Unless of course he really does die, in which case this is moot, but that's not a fitting end for his character.
