Game Of Thrones Season 7: 8 Things You Might've Missed In 'The Spoils Of War'

8. The Grammar King

Game Of Thrones Jon Snow Davos

This one might be slightly more obvious, but it's too good to not point out. When discussing how many men they have, Jon wonders if it could be "less" than 10,000, and Davos takes the opportunity to correct his King's grammar:

"Fewer."

It's a nice callback to the last man he followed, Stannis Baratheon, who was quite the stickler for the rules of grammar. Stannis first corrected Davos' use of the word 'less' back in Season 2's Garden of Bones, and did the same again with a Night's Watch member in Season 5's Kill The Boy, with Davos by his side.

On both occasions, Davos responded with a question ("what?" the first time, and "pardon?" the second), much like Jon does here. Just before this, Davos also clearly places emphasis on the word "whom", further showing off his grasp of grammar. At this stage it's one of Game of Thrones' best recurring jokes, and also a nice reference to how the Baratheon family helped Davos reach the position he's in now (it was Shireen Baratheon who taught him to read).
