Game Of Thrones Season 8: 10 Things That Were ACTUALLY GOOD

9. The Battle For Winterfell

Game Of Thrones Ser Brienne
HBO

The storytelling of Arya pulling a fast one on the Night King is questionable to say the least. What wasn't questionable however was the staggeringly epic quality of the battle that came before it. The white walkers' invasion of Winterfell was wild, unpredictable and a reminder of why Game of Thrones was considered blockbuster television.

From the Night King's sinister smirk after Daenerys blasts him with dragon fire to the Dothraki being swallowed up by the darkness, the whole thing was as violent and suspenseful as one would hope. Criticism has been levelled at just how dark certain scenes of the battle were with viewers complaining they couldn't see what was going on.

Given most of the characters themselves could barely see in the endless night around them, this artistic decision feels like a way of getting us to understand the uphill struggle they were in. Unsettling and disconcerting, we catch a vague hint of the sensory experience of this supernatural extravaganza.

Director Miguel Sapochnik outdid himself with his work on this episode. The news of his involvement in the forthcoming prequel, House of the Dragon, is a good sign for the franchise as a whole.
