Game of Thrones delivered an episode for the ages this week. Coming after the premiere and just one episode prior to the Battle of Winterfell, episode two of Season 8 could quite easily have come off as simply being filler, since it was all about the calm before the storm.

Instead we got the kind of deep, layered, and simply brilliant character work that the show hasn't given us in a very long time. Situated entirely at Winterfell, it was all about the characters, their relationships, and the very real chance that they will all be dead sooner rather than later. It's the eve of war, and that meant time for drinking, singing songs, and basking in the glow of these characters simply being alive.

The episode as a whole was like a callback to what the show used to be like, and within that were lots of actual callbacks, references, and interesting details to pick up on: Bran saying "the things we do for love", the return of Tyrion's death wish joke, and Davos serving Not Shireen are but three more obvious examples.

It was Easter Sunday after all, so there of course had to be some Easter eggs. Praise Jebus.
