Game Of Thrones Season 8: 8 Things We Already Know

3. The Directors Are Locked In

Along with the writers, we also know just who will be directing the final batch of Game of Thrones episodes ever made, and it's about a good a line-up as fans could've hoped for.

The best news is that Miguel Sapochnik is returning after sitting out Season 7. Having helmed classics Hardhome, Battle of the Bastards, and The Winds of Winter (along with the solid The Gift), he's established himself as Thrones' greatest director, especially for big action scenes - which Season 8 will have a lot of. He's helming at least two of the six episodes, and quite possibly three.

The other returnee is David Nutter, who hasn't directed an episode since the Season 5 finale, Mother's Mercy. He was initially supposed to direct Season 7's The Spoils of War, but dropped out after back surgery. He's similarly capable in the action scenes but, more pertinently, is the go-to man for killing off major characters, having murdered the likes of Robb Stark, Catelyn Stark, Stannis Baratheon, and Jon Snow. He's likely doing two episodes, and we can expect some major deaths in both of them.

The series finale, meanwhile, falls to Weiss & Benioff. They've directed a couple of instalments of the show - Walk of Punishment and Two Swords - and are following a trend of creators directing the finale of their series, a la David Chase with The Sopranos, Vince Gilligan with Breaking Bad, and Matthew Weiner on Mad Men.
