Game Of Thrones Season 8 Breakdown: What 'The Last Of The Starks' REALLY Means
3. Jaime's Conflict (Sets Up Him Killing Cersei)
After giving us a pay-off to Brienne and Jaime's romantic flirtations over the past few seasons - and needlessly stomping Tormund's heart into dust for all of about three seconds (he bounced back quickly) - it all crumbles to ash pretty much immediately as we see Jaime's internal conflict burst out of him again.
Clearly, Cersei's power is so corrupting that BOTH of her brothers believe she is redeemable, despite everything. Tyrion is the more confusing on that front, because even as he says she's not a monster, it's clear that she absolutely is. Particularly to him. And he can't count on the same illogical power of love that Jaime can to explain his own decision to leave Winterfell.
It seems we're getting a hint here that Jaime will attempt to reason with Cersei to save her, but it's far more likely that this is a story maneuver to set him up as her killer. Valonqar theory confirmed and all that. Whether they pull the trigger on it remains to be seen, but they're basically making sure that everyone with a dog in the fight against Cersei is heading South at the same time: Arya, Jon, Dany, Jaime... Let's just hope we don't get a Who Shot Mr Burns style pay-off.
