Game Of Thrones: The Meaning Behind Every Episode Title (Season 1)

Episode 4 €“ Cripples, Bastards, And Broken Things

This episodes title refers to a quote made by Tyrion Lannister who, upon being scrutinized by Catelyn Stark about his motivations for helping her son, replies €œI have a tender spot in my heart for cripples and bastards and broken things€. Catelyn€™s distrust of Tyrion is revealed to be due to her belief that the Lannisters are the reason for her son Bran€™s paraplegia, and that Tyrion may be trying to compensate for the guilt he feels. Tyrion's response however, states that his reason for helping Bran is not out of guilt but empathy, as he can relate to social outcasts, such as Bran ( the cripple) and Jon Snow (the bastard), due to his dwarfism meaning he is treated as an outcast himself. This quote is spoken by Tyrion in the episode exactly as it appears in the book; however it is paraphrased for the episode title.
