Game Of Thrones: 10 Criminally Overlooked Performances

9. Clive Russell As Brynden Tully

Another character introduced in season 3, Brynden "The Blackfish" Tully is Catelyn Stark's uncle and a loyal supporter of Robb as King In The North. Clive Russell brings the same sort of laconic candour to Robb's storyline that Jerome Flynn's Bronn brings to Tyrion, but with a unique flair of his own. While arguably not as entertaining a character as Bronn, the Blackfish is exactly what the Riverlands-based cast needed: a stonily confident yet dryly cynical knight. He provides some much-needed levity to this section of the cast, particularly through his bantering with his nephew, Edmure Tully. Russell's performance is easily the most colourful this side of King's landing, and he wears it with both dignity and a bluntness that is much appreciated when Robb needs a henchman who is honest. Why is this Performance Overlooked? The Robb/Catelyn storyline being one of the more tragic plots thus far, focus tends to fall on the more dramatic heartbreakers €“ such as the Red Wedding €“ rather than the quirkier side characters. In fact, the tragedy of the Red Wedding is so thoroughly felt that fans forget it had a single survivor - The Blackfish.
