Game Of Thrones: 10 Things We Learned From "Mockingbird"

7. The Night€™s Watch Leadership Won€™t Listen To Jon

Jon and his men have returned to Castle Black, and while Sam and the other inhabitants are happy to see them back, Alliser Thorne and Janos Slynt don€™t share that joy. Thorne immediately orders Jon to lock Ghost up, or the direwolf will be thrown into the dinner stew. Later, Jon informs the Night€™s Watch leadership that Mance Rayder€™s army will reach the Wall before the next full moon, and to properly prepare, they should seal the Wall€™s tunnel. Plugging it with rocks and ice and then flooding it will render it impassable, but also prevent the Night€™s Watch from ranging north. Thorne is unwilling to cut off their access north, and states that in the thousands of years the Wall has stood, they€™ve never sealed the tunnel. Jon wisely points out that the giants Mace leads will be able to break through the tunnel gate easily. Thorne asks First Builder Yarwick whether they should seal their only access point north. Although his facial expression suggest he agrees with Jon, Yarwick is unwilling to cross Thorne, leading him to answer €œNo.€ Thorne promptly €œrewards€ Jon€™s knowledge of the wildling army by assigning him and Sam lookout duty at night until the next full moon. Jon is obviously knowledgeable about the wildlings and their tactics, but Thorne and Slynt won€™t hear any of it. To them, Jon Snow is a traitor to the Night€™s Watch who should have been executed for €œfraternising€ with the enemy. Since his death sentence was stayed, all they can do now is ignore him and make his life miserable. It doesn€™t matter if his suggestions are good, they€™ll go out of their way to shoot him down. You might want to change your mindset soon, guys. Those giants will kill you easily, and that tunnel idea will help make sure that doesn€™t happen.
