2. The Sept Scene
HBOIn season four, Jaime appears to rape his twin sister Cersei while in the Sept that contains their dead son. It was a controversial scene that managed to anger a lot of people, for a lot of reasons. Many fans were upset that the event was in contradiction to Jaime Lannister's positive character progression from oath breaking villain to redeemable anti-hero. The rape seemed like a huge step backwards for the character, and a horrific deed that is completely at odds with someone that the show seems desperate for us to sympathise with. Things got even stranger when the episode's director and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau both stated that the scene was never intended to be a rape in the first place. Therefore, we've got either a badly directed scene that totally failed to put across what the director intended, or a narrative event that manages to completely undermines three seasons of characterisation.
