Game Of Thrones: 20 Most Paused Moments

2. The Red Wedding (Season 3, Episode 9)

The Red Wedding is the name given to the brutal slaying of Robb Stark, his wife Talisa and Robb's mother Catelyn at the wedding of Walder Frey's daughter Roslin to Edmure Tully. Roslin was to be married to Robb before he decided to marry Talisa instead, and though the hatchet appeared to be very much buried by the time the wedding came around, it became clear that Walder had not forgotten. Talisa is brutally stabbed to death in the stomach, also killing her and Robb's unborn child, while Robb is shot with numerous arrows and eventually stabbed in the chest. At this point, Catelyn murders Walder's wife, and instantly has her throat slit, bleeding to death and slumping to the ground as the episode ends. Easily one of the most shocking and unexpected moments in recent TV history, the Red Wedding has made the wait for season four feel even more agonising.

1. "The King Of The North" (Season 3, Episode 10)

One of the saddest and most grotesque moments in the series comes in the final episode of season three, when Robb Stark's decapitated body is paraded around with the head of his wolf, Grey Wind, crudely sewn on top of it, while the crowd sarcastically shouts "King of the North!" As if the events of the Red Wedding weren't horrific enough, the grim fallout continued in the finale, and though it may not have been able to live up to the excellence of the previous episode, it was still a supremely shocking moment in its own right.
