Game Of Thrones: 5 Winners And 5 Losers In 'The Laws Of Gods And Men'
2. Ser Davos
There are many lords in King Stannis camp who question the pedigree of Ser Davos worth to their king; a smuggler who became a knight and who is now their sovereigns right hand man. They cannot fathom how a lowborn upstart could possibly serve their king in matters of politics and military affairs, but as Ser Davos proves time and time again, he has an apt mind for such things, and was always capable of more than the simple life of a smuggler. It is also credit to Stanniss intuition that he recognised this trait in a lowborn when other kings may have automatically dismissed him because of his low station.
Ser Davos pits his wits and powers of persuasion against the might of the Iron Bank of Braavos in this weeks episode. With no money, the bare bones of an army, and a severe defeat on their CV, Stannis and Ser Davos arrive in Braavos hoping to convince the Iron Bank to finance their claim to the throne of Westeros. The bankers rightly laugh them off, and Stannis is ready to go back and sulk some more on his rock, but Ser Davos throws his will at them, and forces them to consider his Kings claim with the proper respect. As Ser Davos argues, the effectiveness of the Lannister claim will weaken significantly with the death of Lord Tywin, who at sixty-seven, is not long for this world. Can they imagine that a boy will hold the throne for long without the true power of his grandfather behind him? Who then will pay the bank its due? Stannis is in his prime, and as Ser Davos demonstrates with his shortened hand, knows how to deliver what is owed. As many of you will know, anyone who can go to a bank with no credit score and convince them to give you a substantial loan is definitely a winner.
