Game Of Thrones: 5 Winners And 5 Losers In 'Mockingbird'

3. The Night's Watch

Currently the biggest threat to the Night€™s Watch is not the Wildlings or the White Walkers, it is themselves, or rather, the baffling fact that they haven€™t immediately elected a new Lord Commander and instead continue to allow Ser Alliser Thorne to undermine their survival chances because of his petty grievances with Jon Snow. Once again, Jon offers sound advice for the defence of Castle Black, based on his actual first-hand knowledge of the enemy€™s disposition, and once again, Ser Alliser uses his present authority as acting Lord Commander to shut him down, based on nothing but his deaf ear for Jon€™s ideas.

Jon thinks they should close the tunnel that runs through the wall; fill it with rocks and ice and let it freeze over. The Wildlings have real giants, and a few inches of steel isn€™t going to stop them smashing through to Castle Black. Thorne reminds Jon of his place as a steward, and coerces the First Builder with a threatening tone to agree with him that the gate will hold. If nobody but Jon will stand up to Ser Alliser, then it€™s going to be a pretty short fight when the Wildlings do arrive at their doorstep. According to Jon€™s report (again, accurately sourced from first-hand knowledge) the Wildling army was approaching Craster€™s Keep as they were leaving it, which, given that Jon and his party have since returned to Castle Black, can only mean that the Wildlings will be upon them within a matter of days. We hope that Ser Alliser will see the biggest fire the north has ever seen, but somehow we suspect that he won€™t, especially if Jon Snow sees it first.
