Game Of Thrones: 5 Winners And 5 Losers In 'The Mountain And The Viper'

1. Lord Tywin

What, no Tyrion? That€™s right, far too obvious, and also, not really applicable. Tyrion€™s fate has already been sealed for a while now; whether by death or by exile on the Wall, he hasn€™t got much political capital left to lose. Therefore, let€™s examine the man who lost the most (politically speaking) as a result of the trial-by-combat. As the Mountain crushed Prince Oberyn€™s skull like a ripe watermelon, Lord Tywin€™s precious Lannister legacy was also snuffed out. With Tyrion€™s impending execution, Tywin is set to lose his only legitimate heir, and with him, any chance of averting the end of the first-born Lannister line. When Tywin himself moves on from this world, his brother Kevan will become the head of the family, and Kevan€™s only surviving son is Lancel. Yes, Lancel Lannister will be the future of that once great and powerful house. No wonder Tywin always looks so irate. So what is the world€™s greatest dad to do? No doubt his first strategy will be to return to Jaime and somehow convince him to betray his Kingsguard vows and claim his inheritance, but we fear (for Tywin) that ship may have already sailed. It€™s going to take an extremely generous offer for Jaime to submit to his father€™s will now. With Tyrion€™s life thrown away, Jaime has no cause worthy of sacrificing what remains of his honour. One strategy nobody seems to have mentioned is that Tywin himself could re-marry and father as many children as he can before he expires. Of course this would be a desperate, last-gasp measure as there is no way to guarantee a son from such a union. Furthermore, Tywin would not be able to raise any potential heir in his image, as he would likely only live a few years beyond the child€™s birth. So whilst this approach may save his immediate line, there is very little chance he will get the heir he desires. Who knows, the hypothetical kid may be even more unsuited to the role than Lancel.
