Game Of Thrones: 5 Winners And 5 Losers In 'The Mountain And The Viper'
2. Prince Oberyn
Damn you George R. R. Martin, you unforgiving profiteer of the false dawn! Once again, fans across the realm are tearing the fabric from their sofa arms and pleading with their television sets as yet another well-loved, enjoyable character bites the dust in the ongoing, proverbial middle finger to the traditional hero story trope that is Game of Thrones. Defeat has been snatched from the jaws of victory, at the moment when all seemed won, and alas, the Red Viper of Dorne is no more. Unfortunately, Prince Oberyn only has himself (and Martin) to blame. His obsession with provoking a confession from the Mountain took things a step too far. He was not content to see his accused perish by his own blade, but instead wanted the whole world to hear to truth of the crime from the culprits mouth. Prince Oberyns hubris, perhaps his most attractive quality to viewers, ends up being the thing that gets him killed. But it isn't just his death, or the manner of it, that qualifies Prince Oberyn as a loser; he also fails in his attempt to exact vengeance on those responsible for the crime of raping and murdering his sister and killing her children. Whilst he does get his confession at the end, he doesnt live to see the Mountain perish, and also fails to uncover any conspiracy on Lord Tywins part, for collusion in the vile act. In the end, his entire venture in the capital was a resounding failure. Farewell sweet prince.
