Game Of Thrones: 8 Things We Learned From "The Laws Of Gods And Men"
3. Jaime Has An Offer For Tywin
A recess is called, and Jaime uses the opportunity to speak with his father. Unlike most of the realm, Jaime knows Tyrion is innocent, and that the trial is a farce thats been manipulated by Cersei. Tywin insists that Tyrion killed the king, and Jaime reminds him that he did the same. Jaime didnt refuse the Mad Kings orders and save Tywin just so he could see his brother executed. Jaime also reminds Tywin that he said the family dynasty is the most important thing, and if Tyrion is executed, the Lannister dynasty will be forced to pass on through random nephews and extended family members. Jaime gives Tywin an offer: if Tyrions life is spared, Jaime will leave the Kingsguard. Tywin takes the offer. He states that when the guilty verdict is delivered and Tyrion pleads for mercy, he will be allowed to join the Nights Watch. Once Tyrion is gone, Jaime will leave for Casterly Rock, marry someone suitable and produce many children. Thats the game plan. For Jaime to sacrifice is position on the Kingsguard for Tyrion says a lot. Although he and Cersei have had their troubles lately, its possible that Jaime believes that they can still resolve their differences. However, if he leaves the Kingsguard, hell be forced to leave Kings Landing, and hell never be able to continue his relationship with his sister. Hes giving up all this so that Tyrion can live. Thats true brotherly dedication. Unfortunately, as these next sections detail, Jaime wont get that opportunity.
