Game Of Thrones: 8 Things We Learned From "The Laws Of Gods And Men"

2. There€™s A Surprise Witness

After everyone returns to the throne room, Jaime tells Tyrion about the deal he struck with Tywin. Tyrion doubts whether their father will keep his word, but Jaime insists that Tywin won€™t pull the same stunt Joffrey did with Ned Stark. Before they can continue their conversation, the trial resumes, and the next witness it called. Here is the recipient for Most Unexpected Appearance award: Shae. That€™s right, Tyrion€™s lover Shae. Whether she was retrieved by the Lannister forces off her boat or just never left the city at all, Shae has been brought forward to testify against Tyrion. After swearing that her testimony will be honest (unlikely), Shae states that she knows Tyrion since she was his wife Sansa€™s handmaiden. She then delivers the punch: that Tyrion is guilty of killing Joffrey. He supposedly killed the king to help Sansa get revenge for the deaths of her father, brother and mother. Since he hated the king, Cersei and Tywin, he was all too happy to help, and he stole poison from Pycelle to accomplish this. Oberyn questions why Tyrion would tell these plans to his wife€™s maid, and here€™s when things take a turn for the worse. Shae admits that she was Tyrion€™s whore, but her account of their time together doesn€™t match up with what we€™ve seen. She says he stole her and made her cater only to his whims. Everything he wanted she would do, and he had her call him €œher lion.€ Tyrion quietly asks her to stop, but she delivers the final blow. Saying that Sansa wouldn€™t sleep with him after they married, Tyrion promised to kill Joffrey for her. It€™s possible that Shae could have been threatened into betraying Tyrion. The Lannisters may hurt or kill her if she doesn€™t help get Tyrion the guilty verdict. However, if that were the case, she would only have to reveal several small things and leave it that. In her testimony, she went out of her way to reveal intimate details about the two of them. Much of it was true, but she twisted it to make him look like a pervert and deviant. She deliberately said these things to hurt and embarrass him in front of everyone. If this is what's going on, we still don€™t know the full details on why she€™s doing this. However, much of it likely has to do with Tyrion sending her away. He wanted to keep her safe, but she doesn€™t see it like that. She repeatedly told her that she would face any danger with him, but he wouldn€™t listen. By €œThe Lion and the Rose,€ he gets her to leave by distancing himself from her both physically and emotionally. We know it hurt him, but to Shae, he reduced her to nothing more than a common whore. This proved too much for her, and now she€™s getting her revenge. Unfortunately for Tyrion, her words prove to be his breaking point as well...
