Game Of Thrones: 8 Things We Learned From "The Watchers On The Wall"
3. Mammoths And Giants Are Very Useful
Remember those mammoths and giants from earlier? Yeah, they give the wildlings quite the advantage. Since the giants are bigger, they carry larger weapons. An arrow shot by one of the giant archers take out one of the Walls barricade garrisons, and another one impales one of the Nights Watch men, sending his body flying to ground below. Later, the giants take hooked chains and attach them to the Walls main gate. It may be four inches of steel, but being tugged on by a mammoth, two giants and several wildlings will eventually get it to open. Fortunately, the men atop the Wall have been great at dropping things on the wildlings below, and this includes oil barrels with lit fuses. Striking the ground, the explosions kill most of the men. The mammoth freaks out and runs away, and the giant that chases after it is impaled by one of the Watchs giant crossbows. The other giant screams for his fallen comrade and slowly starts lifting the weakened gate up. After seeing the mammoths and giants at the gate, Jon orders Grenn to take five men and hold the gate. Looking into his friends eyes, he repeats the order, saying that the wildlings must not get through. Grenn promises they wont and heads down with the men. When they reach the secondary gate, they witness the giant lifting the gate. One of them starts cowering, but Grenn commands that they defend the gate. Repeating the Nights Watch vows, he rallies the men to fight just as the giant reaches them. After the battle, Jon and Sam discover the men dead underneath the corpse of the giant. Jon orders their corpses burned, presumably so they dont reanimate as wights. Grenn has been a part of the show since the first season. Aside from Jon and Sam, hes one of the most well-known of the Nights Watch men. He may have given Jon a hard time at first, but the two eventually became good friends. He was there for almost every significant event that the Nights Watch was involved with, and he performed his duty to the end. Since the show never introduced Donal Noye, the one-armed blacksmith from the book, the honour of dying in battle against the giant went to Grenn and the men. A heroic way to die, though still tragic.
