Game Of Thrones: 8 Things We Learned From "The Watchers On The Wall"

2. Jon Enters The Battle...At A Cost

Jon has diligently led the men atop the Wall, but when Sam comes to tell him that the southern gate has been breached, he knows that he has to head down and fight. Turning command over to Dolorous Edd, Jon grabs his sword Longclaw and joins the battle below. Like Thorne, Jon is an experienced fighter, and cuts his way through the wildlings. He is soon noticed by Styr, Magnar of Thenn, and the two lock weapons in a vicious duel. It€™s a brutal fight that leads to them losing their weapons and throwing down in fisticuffs. Styr eventually gets the upper hand, but as he€™s being choked, Jon takes a page from Karl's book and spits blood onto Styr€™s face. Momentarily free, he grabs a hammer and buries it in the cannibal€™s skull. With his adversary beaten, Jon turns around and sees...Ygritte! Before the battle began, Ygritte told Tormund and the others that Jon was hers to kill. Though she€™s killed many Night€™s Watch men (the girl has mad archery skills!), she€™s been trying to find Jon, and now that she has him in her sights, she can€™t loose the arrow. They look at each other momentarily until Ygritte is shot by Olly, that kid who survived the wildling village raid several episodes back. Jon rushes over to hold her, and she tells him they never should have left that cave they were €œtogether€ in. He tells her they€™ll go back, and her final words to him are €œYou know nothing, Jon Snow.€ Of course those were her last words. Although Ygritte€™s death was a little cliché, it was still emotional. Though he was determined to stop the wildlings, Jon had true feelings for Ygritte. For her, however, it was an issue of betrayal. She also had feelings for Jon, but when she discovered that he was a spy, she was devastated. Now, despite repeatedly saying that she would kill him throughout the season, she hesitated when she finally had him in her sights. Would she have shot him or would she have laid down her bow? We won€™t know now thanks to that little kid (whose archery skills are also impressive), but at least the two of them got to see each other one last time. By the way, if you€™re trying to get the last word in, €œYou know nothing, Jon Snow€ is an epic last line to go out on.
