Episode 1 - Two Swords

The first episode of the fourth season, Two Swords, refers to the reforging of Eddard Stark€™s greatsword, Ice (a House Stark heirloom), by Tywin Lannister. The valyrian steel that the sword is made of - a priceless, finite resource of exceptional quality - is forged into two smaller swords, one of which Tywin gives to his son Jaime. The scene seems to symbolize the defeat of the Starks and the lack of a threat they now pose to the Lannisters, at least for the foreseeable future, as well as the leadership previously offered by Ned Stark now being replaced by a divided and weaker version. The title may also allude to Arya€™s sword, Needle, which is returned to her in this episode; possibly highlighting that the Starks are not as entirely defeated as Tywin may think.
