Game Of Thrones: Season 4 Death Watch (Breaker Of Chains)

1. Themes Of The Week: Uncertainty - Where Do We Go From Here?

With Joffrey dead the world is changed and everyone is questioning their purpose. Arya tries to (unsuccessfully) redefine her relationship with companion the Hound. Margerey questions whether she is still queen. Tyrion wonders about his fate and Jon continues to grow in confidence and influence amongst his fellow Nightswatchmen. Sansa wonders what her life will be away from Kings Landing, and there is a question over what kind of king Tommen will grow to be. Tywin seeks alliances, Oberyn seeks revenge and Daenerys reaches the peak of her rise to power as saviour of Slavers Bay. There is a sense that everyone is holding their breath, wondering what will happen next. It is something that Stannis questions most deeply; with Joffrey gone he is desperate to claim his seat on the iron throne yet he has no army to raise. When Davos suggests he consider the Golden Company his retort is that he 'will not become a page in somebody else's history book'. Though it does lead Davos to consider the Iron Bank of Braavos in the war to retake the Iron Throne. It is ever more uncertain what will happen next and that's a great thing for readers and non-readers of the books alike. Dany has her army, her dragons, but she's not near Westeros yet. Mance Rayder is marching his army south but there is something far worse in the frozen north. It will make season four (and the announced seasons five and six) a fascinating watch, something we'll continue with next week's season four 'death watch' as we take a look at episode four 'Oathkeeper'.
