Tywin Lannister, played magnificently by the great Charles Dance, is a villain many of us both love and hate. Patriarch of House Lannister, he has a commanding presence that makes everyone in the room quake in their boots. Ruthless, pragmatic, and intelligent, he will do whatever it takes to secure his familys safety and future. Oh, and he is the only one who knows how to put Joffrey in his place, and we love him for that. However, he also orchestrated the Red Wedding and treats Tyrion with contempt. Unfortunately for him, this is the season where all the tension between Tyrion and Tywin comes to a head in one of the most famous moments from the books. Having escaped from the dungeons thanks to Jaime and Varys, Tyrion learns the truth about Tysha: that she wasn't a whore; Tywin told Jaime to lie to Tyrion. Enraged, he uses the secret passages underneath the Red Keep to sneak into the Tower of the Hand. There he sees Shae, naked but for his father's golden chain of office. Feeling betrayed, he strangles her with it. He then grabs a crossbow and confronts his father, on the privy no less. He asks Tywin where he sent Tysha. Wherever whores go, he says. Wrong answer, as Tyrion shoots his own father right in the bowels, leaving him to bleed out as he makes his escape. Just imaging this scene acted out by Peter Dinklage and Charles Dance should be enough to give you chills. It is one of many story shifting moments, and again, the audience is going to go crazy over this scene. Are you noticing a pattern here? Season four is going to be chock full of audience pleasing moments, and this is one of the largest by far. This should be one of Tyrions final scenes of the season, signifying a tonal change in Tyrions arc going forward. What moments are you looking forward to in season four? Let us know in the comments!
