2. The Red Viper Vs. The Mountain
As mentioned earlier, Oberyn Martell, better known by his nickname the Red Viper, is a fan favourite and thus highly anticipated going into season four. He is sharp-tongued, vengeful, and highly skilled with a spear, and he comes to Kings Landing demanding justice from the Lannisters for the deaths of Elia Martell and her children Rhaenys and Aegon. Specifically, he wants the head of ser Gregor Clegane, who raped Elia and then killed her, Rhaenys, and Aegon. Oberyn finally gets his chance when Tyrion calls for trial by combat to prove his innocence in the death of Joffrey. When Cersei calls Gregor, Oberyn jumps at the chance to defend Tyrion. The proceeding fight is one of the most intense of the series because not only are two great fighters with opposite styles duelling it out in spectacular fashion, but also because the fate of Tyrion is at stake. There is much riding on the outcome of this fight, which makes Oberyns loss all the more painful. We are used to seeing our hopes dashed aside in this series, but Martin sets it up so that you actually think things might turn out ok, and naturally, this makes the terrible conclusion all the more, well, terrible. It was an unforgettable scene in the books, and it should be in the show as well, thus making it one of the top most anticipated scenes of the upcoming season.
