1. Too Little Development/Too Much Shipping
TV shows are built from ships. They build up specific couples and intertwine them to build fan-bases and no one has taken more advantage from that then Glee, almost to the point where its intolerable. Glee is basically compromised of 3 ships, Brittney/Santana, Kurt/Blaine, and Rachel/Finn. And everyone in the Glee world can just basically bow down to them because they arent going anywhere. As much as we hope, pray and scream that they would. What started out as 3 endearing and exciting couples has waned over time only to become boring or nonsensical to watch, and its really sad how Glee is willing to destroy characters and any type of importance they have only to become props. Great television shows are aware of their ship and highlight them. However awful television shows choose the Glee route, to realize what they have and shove them to the forefront. Fracturing any type of balance the show may have and instead providing them with angst, no matter how repetitive it may be, to keep the couple apart or together for as long as possible. The problem with this is that it morphs the characters into people who are generally unlikeable and cant really function without their counterparts, so then the writers have to create random or contrived plotlines to thrust them back together. Or it becomes the fact that all the character progression is ruined because they go back to the same people they were. Hence point: Rachel and Kurt broke up with their significant others after having one abandon them and one cheat on the other. A few episodes later they went straight back to sleeping with them, ruining whatever regression they had. This comes after the fact they were both devastated yet completely sure they were ready to move on. If it isnt hammering down the progression, the characters remain stagnant. Take for example the character of Blaine. They thrust him to the forefront without really bringing anything exciting a new to his forefront outside of his relationship with Kurt. The Blaine you see now is the same one you saw when he was introduced. He still sounds the same, acts the same and does mainly the same thing. Same goes for the likes of Artie, Sugar,Joe, and most of the adults. The only characters who have any depth are Tina, who is woefully underused and Kitty who actually has turned into the primary person youd like to see on the Lima side. Not only that but Glee is the king of wasted potential and wasted storylines. Tina and Mikes breakup was supposed to be huge for her character, yet never ever was given a full reason or proper screentime. Sue having a baby with Down syndrome. Blaine and the guy he cheated with. Sam being homeless and conveniently returning. Kittys entire backstory. Ryder being dyslexic. Blaine being gay bashed at a Sadie Hawkins dance and then never mentioning it, not even at his current Sadie Hawkins dance. Santana being in the big city alone while Rachel and Kurt attend NYADA are just a few of all of the great storylines this show could have but choose to replace with cheap gimmicks and contrived storylines. With what seems like a multitude of problems, one may think that Glee should just be cancelled. Do you think Glee deserves to be cancelled? Share your thoughts below...
