In some places, Jim could be losing some of the slim support he currently has. On the basis of the first three episodes his relationship with Barbara Kean seems pretty solid - they're living together in some sort of penthouse clock tower (the pay for a Gotham City Police Department detective must be pretty good, despite everything), there's a decent level of trust (Barbara's managed to shrug off not one but two murder accusations about her beau), and they respect each other's jobs...sort of (the bit where Barbara leaked a story to the Gazette was a little off-base). That could all come crashing down, however, if the revelations about Barbara and her former relationship with Major Crimes Unit investigator Renee Montoya come out. Especially since Montoya seems to have made it her personal crusade to get Gordon chucked out of the police. Jealous much? Montoya's sexuality is an open secret in the comic books, but the romantic history with Barbara was invented for Gotham. It was hinted at in the pilot but now there's been explicit confirmation that the two had some sort of significant relationship, that it didn't end well, and that it perhaps involved some heavy drug use. Whether or not Jim knows about it is one thing; whether or not it did actually end is another. It doesn't look like Renee is quite over Barbara, based on that attempted kiss after dropping by at the apartment (which she has a key for!), and considering all the mucky stuff that James Gordon is getting involved with over the course of the season, she might end up looking like a better prospect than the detective struggling to do the right thing.
