Gotham: 10 Reasons Why It’s A Bust

10. Alfred Is Not Alfred

Since when does Alfred speak with a cockney accent? In the comics, movies, and cartoons, Alfred has usually spoken with an proper English accent (Michael Caine being an exception). He has almost always been a refined British butler to every other iteration of the Caped Crusader. One can understand the writers for the show wanting to make their versions of characters somewhat different in order to stand out. Given that, if they only changed his speech pattern, it would not be such a big deal, but they also gave him a completely different background and personality as well. He now has weapons and special forces combat training, which he uses to defend himself and Bruce quite effectively. One of the things that makes Alfred likeable in his previous incarnations is that he cannot do what Bruce can, but is still able to support him in his own way with a refreshingly dry wit. This Alfred is not only a better fighter than Bruce, but he is also a jerk. This is not the Alfred you know and love.
