The producers promised origin stories were going to be a huge part of the Gotham TV series. Near the end of the trailer that promise is delivered as The Riddler and Poison Ivy are both revealed. It is a brief, fleeting moment showing the characters before they adopt their villainous alter egos, but it is one that has certainly stirred a buzz among fans. After the abysmal portrayal of Poison Ivy by Uma Thurman in Batman & Robin, this is the perfect opportunity to give the character some much-needed justice. Since Pamela Isley (Or Ivy Pepper it seems theyre naming her here, played by Clare Foley) is a far stretch from the woman who controls plant life and men with a single, toxic kiss, itll be interesting to see how this character fits into the series, and how young Pamela, a promising botanist, fits in. Edward Nygmas (Cory Michael Smith) place in the show is far more obvious, playing the part of a cryptic, forensic scientist - the perfect calling for a man who is obsessed with riddles and puzzles. What side of the law he is on, is however up for debate. It is often implied and debated (especially in Frank Millars Dark Knight Returns) that Batman is the cause of these villainous and dangerous characters coming to light. If the Batman never existed, then neither would they. Itll be interesting to see if the show joins the debate and portrays these characters as decent, honest, but maybe slightly damaged beings who are only there because of Batman.
