Gotham: 10 Dream Choices To Play The Joker

4. Michael Cera

Perhaps the biggest and most unlikely actor on the list, given his Hollywood association, but as a fantasy pick there's a lot to like about Cera for a young version of the Joker. He proved with Youth In Revolt that he was more than just the slightly odd side-kick character in quirky comedies, and followed up that stereotype-bending performance with one in Magic Magic as Brink that completely broke expectations. Cera has the same exoticness that marks the majority of the actors on this list out, and his would arguably be the most likely to shock, and even infuriate fans of Batman. But ignoring some of his past film appearances, and the general consensus on the kind of performances he will always stick to, Cera has the kind of interesting look that suits grotesque characters - there is even something of the Penguin in his face - and which could be the foundation for a strong, intriguing performance. He is charismatic enough, and certainly interesting enough to pull off the manifesto to be memorable enough not to fade into Gotham's background, and the most engaging of TV shows tend to have an eye-catching, expectation-defying performance at the centre, which is precisely what Cera would offer.
