Gotham: 15 Craziest Moments
8. Penguin & Butch Kill Azrael (Season 2, Episode 20 - 'Unleashed')
Everything about this scene was ridiculously over-the-top but that is what made it so good. Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) is prevented from taking Azrael into custody when Penguin and Butch Gilzean (Drew Powell) turn up out of nowhere. Armed with a rocket-launcher, they see Azrael off for good. Yes, you heard that right - a rocket-launcher.
There were so many clichés in this scene. From Penguin's tongue-in-cheek, "Always bring the right tools for the job," to Azrael's comical, "Oh God," to that shot of Penguin and Butch walking through the flames when the job is done… but cliché is in Gotham's identity.
It was scenes like this that felt like they were lifted straight off a comic-book page. Gotham could get away with things very few other shows could pull off - it was when it took advantage of this, that the show really shined.
Many characters returned from the 'dead' in Gotham: Fish Mooney, Penguin - even Azrael was Theo Galavan's second shot at life. Therefore, it took a good dose of crazy to truly see a character off for good. This scene provided that.
