Gotham: 8 Changes Needed To Save Season 2

8. Tighten The Focus

Just look at the above piece of promo artwork for Season Two of Gotham (which isn't even the full version) and it quickly becomes apparent that this show has too many characters. That wouldn't be too much of a problem if the series didn't find it necessary to almost always cram each and every one of them into an episode, and season two desperately needs to tighten the show's focus. One of Season One's biggest problems was how the time between each of the characters was divided. While the stories of Jim, Oswald, and Bruce were told well, Harvey Dent wasn't given enough screentime to make a real impact, while we had to suffer through roughly twenty episodes of Edward Nygma's random riddles before he started to finally develop something of a personality and get really interesting and sinister. The best episodes of Gotham were the ones which were devoted to only a small handful of characters, and it would be wise to carry this over into Season Two. The show just feels too unwieldy at this point, and it runs the risk of spiralling out of control and not devoting enough time to the characters viewers are expected to be most invested in. Gotham should primarily be the story of the rise of the three main characters , with the others helping to flesh out this world with their own stories told in the background. It would be nice to see Gotham move away from the freak of the week procedural elements to instead tell an overarching story. That is, after all, where its strength lies (The Ogre is going to be more fondly remembered than any of the random baddies we met in the first two thirds of the season, and that's because he was fleshed out well enough to leave a lasting impact).
