Gotham: 8 Changes Needed To Save Season 2

2. Fewer Villains

When Gotham launched, the focus was very much on the younger versions of the villains who were set to play a role in the series. Catwoman, The Penguin, The Riddler, and Poison Ivy were all at the forefront of marketing (even though the latter ended up doing pretty much nothing in the series), and the show has so far done a fairly good job delving into each of their respective backgrounds. Along the way though, Gotham has also crammed in origin stories or convoluted introductions for Victor Zsasz, Red Hood, The Scarecrow, Two-Face, The Dollmaker (twice), and a number of others. There are still a long list of Batman villains this series can delve into, but they're going to run out at this rate! Catwoman - who inexplicably became a member of Fish Mooney's gang in the finale and seemed perfectly happy to watch Jim get murdered - is already feeling a little stale, and saving some of the bigger names for future seasons might be best. For now, there's a lot of story left with The Penguin and The Riddler alone. The writers need to start stretching their chops and coming up with other interesting pre-Batman threats for Jim and Harvey to tackle who are hopefully a little more inventive than The Balloonman. Worryingly, Season Two is already being heavily promoted around the rise of the villains; new gangsters are coming to Gotham in the form of Tigress and her brother. The show really needs to take a step back and focus on those it spent time building up in Season One before piling more on top of them. Of course, Gotham also needs to avoid telling their stories too quickly, so it's an admittedly tricky balance they have to find. How about letting us get to know Harvey Dent before a third Dollmaker though?
