Gotham: Every Season Ranked Worst To Best

4. Season 1

Gotham Season 5
Warner TV

The premiere episode of Gotham was quite the experience. A harrowing reimagining of the tale we've seen portrayed many times before, it boasted a beautifully twisted aesthetic and haunting score - all of which made being introduced to these new versions of Bruce Wayne, Jim Gordon, Alfred Pennyworth and Harvey Bullock an immersive experience right off the bat.

The stories told throughout the first season were engaging and the show was certainly an intriguing watch. That said, Gotham did struggle to figure out what it wanted to be, sticking too close to the lore at times while also getting bogged down with its procedural format as Gordon and Bullock investigated new crimes each and every week - something that grew tiresome halfway through this debut year.

But, like Gordon said, there was light - and the overarching stories involving reinvented characters like Oswald Cobblepot, Selina Kyle and Edward Nygma provided solid groundwork for future seasons to expand upon as the writers began going off-book in the best kinds of ways.
